Tom's Hardware says Radeon HD 4870 x2 - "Fastest on Planet"

Radeon Video Graphics cards get high marks across the board in terms of value for money from Tom's Hardware reviews and in many cases are selected as number one choice regardless of price.

In the category "PCI Express Interface: $0 to $90", Radeon's 4350 and 4370 recevie top billing, while in the higher prices category "PCI Express Interface: $310 and up" Radeon's HD 4850 and HD 4870 get top billing.

"In the 4850 CrossFire benchmarks we’ve seen so far, we’ve found that AMD has really learned to squeeze the performance out of its new cards," said the reviewer.

"...there are those of you to whom money might not be much of an object, who can afford a 30” LCD monitor, and who require the best possible performance money can buy. For those of you, we recommend the Radeon HD 4870 X2, the fastest video card on the planet."

ATI Radeon HD 4830 - Budget card introduced

The ATI Radeon HD 4830 graphics card has been introduced, delivering DirectX 10.1 performance priced at under $150.

AMD syas ASUS, Club 3D, Diamond Multimedia, Force3D, GECUBE, GIGABYTE, HIS (Hightech Information Systems), Jetway, MSI, Palit Multimedia, PowerColor, SAPPHIRE Technology and VisionTek will offer the boards.

The single-slot HD 4830 card runs at 575 MHz, with a reported memory clock of 1,800 MHz. The card includes 640 stream processors and 32 texture-management units. It generates 740 GFLOPs. The card uses to 512 Mbytes of GDDR-3 memory -- there is no 1-Gbyte option -- and consumes a maximum of 110 watts.

It is clear that AMD is fighting hard to fight the challenge nVidia has thrown. This is their latest attempt. It competes with nVidia's budget offering, GeForce 9800 GT. The price is at parity with the 9800 GT.

The ATI HD Radeon 4830 supports PCI Express 2.0 interface and scores over 9800 GT's DirectX 10 by giving DirectX 10.1. It has the same 512MB GDRR3 memory with a touch less core clock speed but more stream processing units when compared to the pitched 9800 GT.

Other features the card integrates is the CrossFireX technology that allows gamers to combine as many as four cards in one PC, 1 HDMI port via adapter, TV-Out and 2 DVI ports.

AMD also claims that GPU delivers more than 30fps in games like Devil May Cry 4, Company of Heroes and ET: Quake Wars whereas 9800 GT fared lower

Radeon HD 4850 X2 readiness alert

Scuttlebut has it that there is a new Radeon HD 4850 X2 on its way. Commentators are surprised about this, given the silence after the launch of the Radeon HD 4870 X2 but they note that if it is priced right, it could be a popular option.

The card is said to have 2GB GDDR3 memory, core/memory clock will be 625MHz /993MHz. The rumour has it that the card will come with 4 DVI and one TV out.

ATI X1950 XTX: New King Of the 3D Hill?
We covered this some time ago, but the ATI Radeon X1950 XTX is now official. ATI's new flagship PCI Express graphics card will cost you $449, which is pretty cheap. It's based around a 648MHz graphics chip and 1GB of fast GDDR4 memory running at 2GHz. There's also a new heatsink design to cool the graphics chip without sounding like a runaway lawnmower. HardOCP have already tested the card and found it to be pretty speedy and pretty quiet, delivering good prefomance for the price. The new card will be available on September 14th.– Richard Baguley

Radeon X1950 XTX's cooling system

It seems that people aren't too keen on the idea of their graphics card sounding like a jet engine while it's cooling. As a result, ATI is set to redesign the upcoming Radeon X1950 XTX's cooling system, acceding to the demands of its patrons. Right now, all information points to a redesigned cooling system that resembles the one currently in HIS Radeon X1900 graphics cards, the ICQ3, which supposedly cooled an ATI X1900 (pictured here) 10 degrees Celsius cooler than ATI's own cooling mechanism.

The dual slot ATI Radeon X1950 XTX is slated for release next month and will feature shiny GDDR 4 memory. No price yet, though an arm and a leg may be involved. – Nicholas Deleon
