In September 2015, a strategic realignment occurred at AMD to put a singular focus on graphics and bring AMD back to its roots of delivering great high-performance computing products.  With that, the Radeon™ Technologies Group (RTG) was born.

Before creating RTG, the Radeon™ brand was flourishing with strong early leadership in DirectX® 12, a robust lineup of Radeon™ 300 series graphics cards, and burgeoning VR alliances. We were delivering great hardware for gamers, but good wasn’t good enough; it was time to make graphics great again.

Our vision was to fully revamp and revitalize the Radeon brand.  We knew we needed to execute on multiple fronts: hardware, software and marketing.  We needed to innovate at a blistering pace, establish leadership positions within new platforms like virtual reality, radically redesign our software ecosystem, develop new technologies, and deliver premium hardware at affordable prices.

As Raja told me, “The Radeon Technologies Group umbrella granted AMD a dedicated division focused on growing our business and creating a thriving environment for the best and brightest minds in graphics to be part of the team re-defining the industry. We’re making great progress toward our goal of impacting 90%+ of immersive pixels in the world by 2020 with AMD Radeon IP.”

Indeed, Raja and our entire team are driven to not only perfect the pixel itself, but everything it touches. And that is precisely what the Radeon Technologies Group has had the pleasure of doing for the past 12 months. Here’s an abbreviated look at our first successful year.

November 2015: Radeon Software Crimson Driver Launches

With a completely revamped user interface and an eye toward a smooth out-of-the-box experience, our Radeon Software Crimson series drivers launched alongside a promise to deliver stable, game ready drivers more frequently. So far in 2016, we’ve delivered with 21 timely driver updates. Not only has this benefited our users and created more demand for Radeon hardware, but Forbes recently praised RTG for transforming our drivers from a liability into an asset.

December 2015: GPUOpen Launches

We believe that advancing the VR industry and effectively enabling content creators means not locking out the competition. That’s why we created GPUOpen, a comprehensive collection of visual effects and productivity tools that are easily downloadable at no cost to developers, allowing them to level-up their code.

More recently at SIGGRAPH Capsaicin we announced Radeon ProRender and Project LOOM, two important new pieces of the GPUOpen initiative. They will both be open source, free to use, and platform agnostic.

March 2016: Radeon Pro Duo Launches

Powering VR development and doubling as a supercharged dual-GPU graphics card for ultra-enthusiast gaming, the Radeon™ Pro Duo drives content creation at the ultimate fidelity level.

March 2016: Vulkan™ Driver Launches

This graphics API offers the same powerful combination of OS compatibility, rendering features, and hardware efficiency.

June 2016: Polaris Launches

Polaris is the brightest star you can see from Earth, so it seemed only fitting to name our most ambitious architecture after it. Our next-gen Polaris architecture built on a 14nm FinFET process, delivers a historic leap in performance alongside dramatic improvements in power efficiency.

As PC gamers would soon realize, Polaris would represent not just a new batch of graphics cards and forward-thinking visual computing IP, but also Radeon Technology Group’s commitment to providing affordable virtual reality experiences for anyone.

July 2016: Radeon Pro SSG Announced

The first professional graphics card solution with a 1TB SSG (Solid-State Graphics) on the board, the Radeon Pro SSG blends existing Polaris GPU architecture with a full terabyte of M.2 non-volatile memory. Edit raw 8K video at blistering speeds and break down the barriers of working with large data sets.

August 2016: 101 FreeSyncDisplays

Here’s a number we’re thrilled about! Since its introduction, 101 AMD FreeSync technology-capable displays have been unveiled, putting an end to choppy gameplay and broken frames. With a ton of features, sizes, and resolutions to choose from, FreeSync delivers fluid, artifact-free gameplay at a price that’s cheaper than the competition.

September 2016: Radeon Technologies Group Celebrates First Birthday

As you can see from the accompanying infographic, we’ve been busy! We’re passionate about perfecting pixels and delivering an unrivaled gaming experience for our community and uncompromising power and creative freedom for developers and content creators.

And if you think our first 12 months was exciting, wait until you see what RTG has lined up for the future.
