The DirectX® 12 Difference

With the DirectX® 12 API from Microsoft®, you get blazingly fast performance, higher frames per second, and reduced latency – using the hardware you own now. By tapping into all the cores of your multicore CPU simultaneously, DirectX 12 boosts the amount of work that can be sent to the graphics card – and gets it done in less time. Plus, DirectX 12 allows your GPU to run multiple tasks at once, so you save rendering time, reduce latency, and get more frames per second. Two revolutionary features in DirectX 12 are driving these innovations: multi-threaded command buffer recording and asynchronous shaders.



Multi-threaded command buffer recording opens up a wide communication lane between your AMD processor or APU and your AMD Radeon™ GPU – so more than one CPU core can talk to the GPU at a time.

With DirectX® 11, most of the graphics work was loaded onto one core.

Vulkan: Forged by the Industry

Developed by the Khronos Group, the same consortium that developed OpenGL®, Vulkan™ is a descendant of AMD’s Mantle, inheriting a powerful low-overhead architecture that gives software developers complete access to the performance, efficiency, and capabilities of Radeon™ GPUs and multi-core CPUs.

Compared to OpenGL, Vulkan™ substantially reduces “API overhead” – the background work a CPU does to interpret what a game asks of the hardware – to deliver meaningful features, performance, and image quality and expose GPU hardware features that wouldn’t ordinarily be accessible through OpenGL.

The best news for Radeon™ gamers? Any AMD APU or Radeon™ GPU based on the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture is already Vulkan™-compliant. Because of this, form factors of all shapes and sizes can benefit from what Vulkan™ has to offer.
