Gather a crowd of AMD Radeon fans, gamers and competitive players in one spot—what do you get?

Well, a lot of computers, for one—but not just computers: gorgeous, customized rigs with custom liquid cooling loops, exotic dyes and beefy fans. As technical marketing specialist Gilbert Leung put it, “It’s like looking at art.”

AMD Markham was home to the Radeon ExtravaLANza this past weekend, an annual event calling gamers and tech enthusiasts for an extravagant hybrid LAN party and series of tournaments. Organized by MediaXP, partners Overclock, ASUS, NCIX, Sapphire Nitro, Cooler Master and Gigabyte gathered to show off their tech and booths to curious visitors, with plenty of games and VR lined up to keep them absorbed for the all-day event.

Tournaments required sign-ups beforehand, but the public space boasted an hourly Rocket League tournament for visitors to win a rare engineering graphics card sample. VR booths with Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR headsets offered kids and adults a jump into a new reality with many queuing to have another go—for those who have tried VR, we know the feeling of wanting to go back into that world. Vendors gave away all sorts of free swag from lanyards to game beta codes. For anyone who came to ExtravaLANza out of curiosity, they found themselves swept away by endless activities to jump between.

And on the other side, intensity ensued with competitors and their stationed rigs battling it out in all-day matches of Super Smash Bros., Dota 2 and CS:GO. The moment you walked into the cafeteria, transformed into a buzzing BYOC (Bring Your Own Controller/Computer) zone, the atmosphere changed instantly. The clattering of rare mechanical keyboards filled the space. Tension hung in the air. Eyes were glued to rows of screens. Every once in a while, a sudden uproar echoed in the BYOC space—though you couldn’t tell if it was a victorious cry or a frustrated one.
