Breaking the Memory Barrier with Radeon™ Pro SSG

“If only.” Those are the words many researchers must have said time and again as they confronted an application, whether in genome sequencing, media and entertainment (M&E), medical imaging or oil and gas exploration, requiring manipulation of huge datasets. If only they had a solution with enough memory to get the job done, they could open new horizons of knowledge or execute game-changing business strategies.

Here at AMD we have been listening and I’m happy to say that help is on the way. It’s coming in the form of Radeon™ Pro Solid State Graphics (SSG), a new Radeon™ Pro graphics technology, which has a full terabyte of SSG memory for very large dataset applications, enabling vastly higher performance compared to existing GPU memory implementations.

Radeon™ Pro SSG is about “the art of the impossible”. In medicine, Radeon™ Pro SSG technology can enable the creation of real-time 3D images of complex structures in action – such as a beating human heart. Imaging like that can help enable cardiologists to find and resolve problems quickly. In medicine, time saved often translates to lives saved.

But “the art of the impossible” is also about, well, the art. Bollywood film “Baahubali,” the result of a collaboration between AMD and director S.S. Rajamouli, is a great example of what can be done. Released last year, Baahubali contains a large number of spectacular visual effects, including a 1,500-foot mystical waterfall. The ability to create mountains and temples through visual effects enabled by AMD FirePro™ graphics eliminated the need for expensive sets and on-site shooting, cutting costs significantly.

With Radeon™ Pro SSG, for the first time, creators will be able to realize their imagination without constraints – imagine play back, work with and scrub 8K videos real-time, at 90 frames per second. We’re providing an unprecedented amount of non-volatile memory at an unprecedented proximity to the GPU, bypassing the operating system and other components in the PC. The possibilities are virtually endless, and will open up doors for developers that were shut or hidden before.

Without the memory architecture in Radeon™ Pro SSG, there is simply too much latency for acceptable performance from many applications that call on very large amounts of data. That latency arises when slices of data are processed individually and later merged, and when data is fetched from a disk drive or from a cloud service. However with Radeon Pro SSG, the data is held in a one terabyte frame buffer dedicated to the GPU, eliminating virtually all latency.

It’s not complicated. Holding large amounts of data in memory makes it possible to create applications that were impossible before. Soon, we won’t be hearing “if only” quite so often.

  1. Hi, I’m a freelancer from Jamaica, CG is my passion and I use various 3D software namely Autodesk Entertainment Suite and Adobe CC line of products to name a few. AMD innovation with this Radeon™ Pro SSG is like music to my ears, bottom line I’m impressed and I can’t wait to be able to render with this product in V-ray or Post production in After Effects/Premiere Pro. I was planning on buying 3 Radeon RX480 just to get that extra VRAM to render with but this is a whole different ball-park and I’m anxious to get my hands on at least 1. Thanks guys, for being awesome at what you do.
